Tagliagamba served as a bodyguard for mob bigshot Umberto Valente in the early 1920s.

On May 8, 1922, the day of Vincent Terranova's murder, Joe Masseria ambushed Valente and Tagliagamba at the curbside Liquor Exchange in downtown Manhattan. The location was just down the block from police headquarters.

Valente escaped unharmed, but Tagliagamba was mortally wounded in the attack. Masseria was apprehended at the scene.
